Itinerary

Itinerary

Madagascar is not an easy destination, and that is exactly what makes it special. An island-continent where 90% of its species are unique on the planet, with three completely different ecosystems that we will travel through from east to west: the humid rainforest of Andasibe, the Avenue of the Baobabs at sunset and the southern forest where the Sifakas live. We have designed each stage with light, access and comfort in mind, so that you only have to worry about photographing and enjoying.

Arrival at Ivato International Airport (TNR).

Meeting with the local team and transfer to the hotel.

Briefing with our Malagasy guide to get familiar with the itinerary, travel details and photographic best practices.

Accommodation: Radisson Blu Antananarivo

Departure from Antananarivo along the RN2 road.

At midday, a stop in Moramanga for lunch and a first photography session: the covered market with its chiaroscuro light and the colorful Pousse-Pousse (rickshaws) are the ideal setting to practice panning and street portraiture.

In the afternoon, arrival in Andasibe and check-in at the hotel.

At dusk, first guided night walk along the edges of the reserve, searching for Mouse Lemurs, chameleons sleeping on branches and endemic frogs.

Accommodation: Relais de Mantadia

In the morning, immersion in the primary forest of Analamazaotra searching for the Indri Indri, the largest lemur in the world.

We will work on exposure to avoid backlit silhouettes and also look for the Diademed Sifaka, which often comes closer to the ground.

In the afternoon, we slow down the pace in the village of Andasibe: the old colonial train station and its tracks offer perfect leading lines for documentary photography.

At dusk, a second and more technical night walk specifically searching for Goodman's Mouse Lemur.

Accommodation: Relais de Mantadia

Early departure from Andasibe descending towards the east coast through forests of Ravinala (the Traveller's Tree), with spontaneous stops to photograph tropical landscapes and fruit stalls.

At midday, a crossing by private motorboat along the Canal des Pangalanes: an aquatic photography safari with dugout canoe fishermen, riverside villages and vegetation reflected in golden water.

Arrival at Hotel Palmarium, where lemurs roam freely through the lodge gardens.

At night, a motorboat excursion to the reserve islet to search for the Aye-Aye, one of the most exclusive and technically challenging encounters in the natural world.

Accommodation: Hotel Palmarium

Morning dedicated to the Palmarium Reserve at a leisurely pace: incredibly confiding wildlife ideal for working with wide-angle lenses (24-70mm) and capturing "wildlife in context".

Stars of the show: Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur, Crowned Lemur and Brown Lemur.

At midday, rest and card download (the overhead light on white sand and water is harsh).

In the afternoon, macro photography of endemic carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes) and a golden and blue hour session over Lake Ampitabe, composing with silhouettes of palm trees and fishermen's dugout canoes.

Accommodation: Hotel Palmarium

Sunrise departure by motorboat along the Pangalanes: the morning mist over the water creates mystical atmospheres and perfect symmetrical reflections.

Transfer to the mainland and ascent along the RN2, documenting the dramatic change in vegetation, charcoal vendors and adobe villages on the hillsides.

Lunch stop in Moramanga.

Arrival in Antananarivo and rest.

Accommodation: Radisson Blu Antananarivo

Domestic flight Antananarivo – Morondava.

Arrival on the west coast, intense dry heat.

First encounter with the beach and traditional dhows in front of the hotel.

In the afternoon, early departure to the Avenue of the Baobabs: scouting for compositions before the golden hour, waiting for zebu carts to pass and, once the tourists have left, blue hour with tripod to capture the black silhouettes of the Baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri) against the electric sky.

Accommodation: Le Palissandre Côte Ouest

Departure in complete darkness to reach the Avenue of the Baobabs before sunrise: absolute peace, low mist between the roots and raking side light that reveals the texture of the age-old bark.

Mid-morning, dugout canoe crossing to Betania for an environmental portrait session with the estuary fishermen, paying special attention to the women with their faces painted in Masonjoany.

Rest at midday (the light is unrelenting).

In the afternoon, a visit to the authentic market of Morondava for texture and movement photography.

Close of the day with dhows at sunset from the hotel beach.

Accommodation: Le Palissandre Côte Ouest

Transfer to Morondava airport and return flight to the Highlands.

Arrival in Antananarivo, check-in at the Radisson Blu and a restorative rest to tackle the RN7 route fresh the following day.

Accommodation: Radisson Blu Antananarivo

Domestic flight to Fort Dauphin (Taolagnaro), with a spectacular aerial approach between bays and mountains.

Visit to the Nahampoana Reserve: an open setting ideal for clean compositions with the Bamboo Lemur, chameleons and radiated tortoises under light filtered through bamboo.

In the afternoon, route towards Berenty through sisal plantations and the unique ecosystem of the Spiny Forest.

At night, a nocturnal visit to the gallery forest reserve searching for the White-footed Sportive Lemur and Sifakas sleeping in the forks of the trees.

Accommodation: Berenty Lodge

Entering the reserve with the first light.

The main subject: the Propithecus verreauxi.

We will position ourselves lying in the forest clearings waiting for them to come down to the ground to cross between forest areas — that is where the dance happens.

Settings: minimum speed 1/1600s, continuous AF, maximum burst.

We will also search for the large troops of Ring-tailed Lemurs for low wide-angle perspectives.

In the afternoon, return to Fort Dauphin with a stop at the sisal plantations for geometric and minimalist compositions.

Arrival at the Talinjoo Hotel, perched on the cliff overlooking the sea, for the blue hour over the Indian Ocean.

Accommodation: Talinjoo Hotel

Transfer to Fort Dauphin airport and domestic return flight to the capital.

Arrival in Antananarivo and rest at the hotel.

Accommodation: Radisson Blu Antananarivo

Transfer to Ivato International Airport for the return flight.

With luggage full of images and the memory of a world like no other, you will board your flight back home.
