Kingdom of Mustang

Kingdom of Mustang

Buddhist monastery in Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang

Introduction

Our photographic journey to the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang (Nepal) is a 12-day expedition through one of the last places on earth where time seems to have stood still. This high-altitude desert in the heart of the Himalayas holds the purest Tibetan culture intact: ancient monasteries perched on cliffs, ochre adobe villages beneath impossibly blue skies, and the Lo-pa people, who have weathered centuries of isolation with a warmth and a faith that will leave you speechless. For a photographer, Mustang is not a destination: it's a living canvas where the extreme Himalayan light changes everything minute by minute.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Few places on the planet receive fewer visitors than Upper Mustang (Nepal). Getting there isn't easy —it takes a special permit, a domestic flight and several days on the road—, and that's exactly what makes it so valuable for photography: no crowds, no rush, with real access to a territory where Tibetan culture has remained practically untouched for centuries. We designed this expedition for a group of no more than 8 people. The light sets the pace, not the itinerary. There's time to return to the same monastery two days running, to wait for an elder to come out and sit in the sun on the usual corner, to understand a place before trying to photograph it. Mustang can't be improvised: it's worked slowly, and the results show.

On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), our team will give you a traditional welcome.

Transfer to the hotel for check-in and rest after the long journey.

In the afternoon, schedule permitting, we'll hold a first briefing on the trip's logistics and the photographic opportunities awaiting us in Mustang.

Accommodation: Hotel Barahi

Morning devoted to the final processing of the special permits for Upper Mustang.

In the afternoon we fly to Pokhara.

This 25-minute flight is, in itself, the first great photographic opportunity: we fly parallel to the Himalayan range.

On arrival in Pokhara, the city of lakes, we transfer to the hotel.

Free time to stroll along the shore of Phewa Lake and capture the reflections of Machapuchare at sunset.

Accommodation: Dorje's Resort & Spa

Our expedition begins in 4x4 jeeps.

We leave the tropical green behind and enter the deepest gorge in the world: the Kali Gandaki, separating the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.

The drive (approx. 6 hours) is a spectacular visual transition.

We reach Kalopani, a strategic spot: if the sky is clear, we'll have a stunning close-up of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna I (8,091m), as well as Tukuche Peak (6,920m).

Accommodation: Kalopani Guest House

A dense, visually exquisite day.

Marpha: an essential stop in the "apple capital".

Its cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses and meticulous cleanliness offer minimalist compositions and excellent street portraits.

Kagbeni: the gateway to Upper Mustang, a medieval adobe village straight out of a film, with narrow alleys and ancient monasteries.

The wind here is often strong, adding drama to the landscape.

Dhumba Lake & Thini: we visit this sacred emerald-water lake before climbing towards Muktinath.

Arrival in Muktinath for the night.

The views of Nilgiri (7,060m) at sunset are sublime.

Accommodation: Lo Mustang Himalayan Resort

We devote the morning to exploring the Muktinath temple complex, a sacred site where Hinduism and Buddhism coexist.

We photograph the pilgrims beneath the 108 sacred water spouts and the eternal flame of the Jwala Mai temple.

The mystical atmosphere, the incense smoke and the devotion are perfect for documentary and portrait photography.

We explore the surrounding villages (Jharkot or Purang), where rural life goes on untouched by mass tourism, with textures of ancient stone and sun-weathered faces.

Accommodation: Lo Mustang Himalayan Resort

Today we officially cross into Upper Mustang.

The landscape changes radically to a high-altitude desert of ochres, reds and yellows.

Chuksang: cliff caves and the river crossing.

Ghami: we cross the Nyi La pass and descend to Ghami, famous for the longest Mani wall (stone prayer wall) in Nepal — the composition of this red wall snaking through the grey landscape is iconic.

Arrival in Charang (Tsarang), a photographic gem with its huge five-storey fortress (Dzong) and the red Gompa perched on the edge of the canyon.

Accommodation: Maya's Heritage Inn

A full day to explore the eastern zone, one of the most remote and spectacular.

We head towards the Yara and Ghara area to visit Luri Gumba, a mysterious 13th-century cave monastery embedded in eroded cliffs that look like fairy chimneys.

Inside, Luri Gumba holds ancient mural paintings of incalculable value (a tripod and the monk's permission are required to photograph with care).

The landscape outside, with wind-eroded sand formations, offers incredible abstract textures.

Return to Charang.

Accommodation: Maya's Heritage Inn

We drive north, into the heart of the kingdom.

Ghar Gompa (Lo Gekar): before reaching the capital, we detour to visit the oldest monastery in Mustang (8th century), older even than Samye in Tibet.

Its red stupas stand out against the deep blue sky.

Arrival in Lo Manthang, the walled capital.

In the afternoon, an excursion to Chhoser (near the Chinese border) to visit the Sky Caves of Jhong, multi-storey cave dwellings carved into the rock.

The landscape here is vast and awe-inspiring.

Return to Lo Manthang to wander the streets and capture the daily life of the Lobas (the people of Lo) at sunset.

Accommodation: Royal Mustang Resort

A long day on the road (approx. 7 hours) beginning the descent, with strategic stops.

Dhakmar: we stop at this village famous for its intensely red cliffs — legend says the colour comes from the blood of a demon defeated by Guru Rinpoche.

The contrast of these red cliffs with the green and yellow trees is possibly the most iconic image of Mustang.

We continue the descent out of the restricted area and back to the comfort of Thasang.

Accommodation: Lodge Thasang Village

We continue the descent through the Kali Gandaki gorge.

The air grows denser and more humid as we drop.

Arrival in Pokhara.

Free afternoon to relax, enjoy a hot shower, a massage, or edit your first photos with a cold beer by the lake.

Accommodation: Dorje's Resort & Spa

Flight back to the capital — another chance to capture the Himalayas from the air.

Transfer to the hotel in Kathmandu.

Afternoon for last-minute shopping or, for the insatiable, a visit to the Boudhanath Stupa at sunset, when Tibetans walk their koras lighting thousands of butter lamps.

Farewell dinner to celebrate the success of the expedition.

Accommodation: Hotel Barahi

Breakfast at the hotel.

Depending on your flight time, free time until the transfer to the International Airport for the final departure.

End of the trip.
