Itinerary

Itinerary

The trip, day by day

Eleven days across Argentina and Chile, organised around the light. We begin in El Calafate, standing before the seventy metres of ice of the Perito Moreno. We continue in El Chaltén, with sunrises over Fitz Roy and the lenga forests in full autumn red. Then we cross into Torres del Paine: the Horns, Lake Grey and its drifting icebergs. And we leave the best for last. A whole day tracking the puma, from dawn to dusk, on the steppe and with trackers who know every animal by name. No enclosures, no fences: the cat on its own ground, and us waiting to photograph it.

Group welcome and vehicle pick-up.

Time to prepare and adjust your gear, go over the light plan for the days ahead and, if the afternoon allows, a first walk along Lago Argentino.

Accommodation: Xelena Hotel & Suites

Early departure to catch the first light along Lago Argentino.

The walkways place us before a 70-meter wall of ice that calves with a thunderous roar: a whole morning to wait for the moment of collapse.

Telephoto for the detail, wide angle for the scale.

Accommodation: Xelena Hotel & Suites

Scenic transfer to El Chaltén, the trekking capital.

We save the afternoon for sunset over Fitz Roy from the Río de las Vueltas viewpoints, when the granite turns pink.

Accommodation: Los Cerros del Chaltén

A moderate hike to Laguna Capri, where Fitz Roy is reflected without the effort of the Laguna de los Tres climb.

All around, the lenga forests in full autumn red.

At sunset, back to the Río de las Vueltas.

Accommodation: Los Cerros del Chaltén

Sunrise with the peaks ablaze.

In the morning, an optional boat trip to the Viedma glacier to photograph icebergs at water level.

In the afternoon, return to El Calafate.

Accommodation: Xelena Hotel & Suites

We cross the border at Cerro Castillo and drive straight into Torres del Paine National Park.

First views of the Horns and check-in on the western side, our landscape base.

Accommodation: Pampa Lodge

A full day of landscape: Lake Grey and its drifting icebergs, Salto Grande, the Paine Massif viewpoints and the entrance to the French Valley.

Sunset over the Horns closes the day.

Accommodation: Pampa Lodge

Last shots in the west of the park and transfer to Puerto Natales, on the shore of the fjord.

An afternoon to rest and prepare the gear: tomorrow we rise early for the highlight of the trip.

Accommodation: Simple Patagonia

Pre-dawn departure with a specialized wildlife photography operator and trackers who know every animal.

A full day tracking the wild puma in its habitat, in the light of dawn and dusk, the hours when the cat moves.

Expert guide, trackers, vehicle and a field lunch.

Accommodation: Simple Patagonia

The drive back into Argentina by a direct route, with the border crossing and the last landscapes of Patagonian steppe.

Night in El Calafate.

Accommodation: Xelena Hotel & Suites

Breakfast and transfer to El Calafate airport.

End of the expedition, with full memory cards and, almost certainly, the urge to come back.

Resting well is part of the trip

We sleep at four bases chosen for their location and their comfort. In El Calafate, the Xelena Hotel & Suites, above Lago Argentino, opens and closes the trip. In El Chaltén, Los Cerros del Chaltén, a boutique hotel with views over the valley at the foot of Fitz Roy. In Torres del Paine, the Pampa Lodge, a serene lodge in the Río Serrano sector, within the setting of the park.
