Mongolia

Kazakh eagle hunter with his golden eagle, Mongolia

Introduction

Mongolia is one of those destinations that changes everything. A country of epic proportions where the landscape seems to have no end: steppes without horizon, red sandstone canyons, the absolute silence of the Gobi and a sky that stays clear for more than two thirds of the year. No wonder they call it the "Land of the Blue Sky". On this expedition we'll travel in Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s along routes few cameras have covered, and stay in traditional Ger camps in the heart of nature. We'll photograph nomadic herders driving Bactrian camels across the southern dunes and, in Western Mongolia, we'll experience one of the trip's most exclusive moments: private photography sessions with Kazakh eagle hunters. These men have practiced falconry with golden eagles for centuries. Our private sessions let you photograph them in their own surroundings, with the Altai mountains as a backdrop, without crowds or rushing: the kind of access that sets a photography expedition apart from an ordinary trip.

Itinerary

Itinerary

The trip, day by day

Eleven days crossing three distinct worlds: the energy of Ulaanbaatar, the absolute silence of the Gobi and the Western Mongolia of the Kazakh eagle hunters. We begin in the capital, with an immersion in nomadic culture and the wild horses of Khustai National Park. Then we fly south to wake among the Khongor dunes: more than 130 km of sand where we'll photograph Bactrian camels with their herders in the first light. We continue to the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where the red rock blazes in the light of sunset. The final stage takes us to Ulgii, in the far west of the country. There, over two full days, we'll have private photography sessions with Kazakh eagle hunters in the foothills of the Altai mountains.

Upon arrival at ULN airport in Ulaanbaatar, you will be met by our guides and transferred to the hotel.

After a well-deserved rest, we will take a brief tour of the city, including Chinggis Khaan Square and the National Museum of History.

Accommodation: Hotel Best Western UB

After breakfast we will head to a traditional Mongolian nomadic lifestyle show, followed by a traditional Mongolian lunch.

In the afternoon, we set off for Khustai National Park, where we will have the opportunity to witness Mongolia's wild horses in all their splendor.

Accommodation: Hotel Best Western UB

Domestic flight from UB to Dalanzadgad (1.5 hours).

If no flights are available, we will travel by car from Ulaanbaatar at no extra cost.

Depending on the arrival time, we may enjoy our first photography session in the Khongor sand dunes at sunset.

Accommodation: Gobi Erdene Camp

Sunrise photography session in the Khongor dunes, which stretch for more than 130 km.

We will photograph camels and a local herder who will guide us through the dunes to capture the best images.

In the afternoon, an unforgettable sunset in the dunes and a night photography session under a starry sky.

Accommodation: Gobi Erdene Camp

We head towards Bayanzag, the famous "Flaming Cliffs", known for the intense red color they take on at sunset and for being the place where the world's first dinosaur eggs were discovered.

We will enjoy the sunset from panoramic viewpoints with spectacular views.

Accommodation: Mongolian Gobi Tourist Camp

Return flight to UB from Dalanzadgad local airport (1.5 hours, included in the price).

Free afternoon to continue exploring the city.
