Photo safari in Masai Mara (Kenya): a unique experience

Discover the magic of the Masai Mara, a place where the abundance of wildlife, the excellence of our Maasai guides, and world-class photographic opportunities combine to offer an unsurpassed experience. Considered one of the best photographic destinations in the world, the Masai Mara is the perfect setting for capturing Africa's wildlife.

As a passionate wildlife enthusiast and award-winning photographer, I organize photo safaris for small groups of up to 5 people, to ensure an intimate and personalized experience. Our base camp is the cozy Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, a place that promises not only comfort but also total immersion in the natural environment.

My goal is to share this passion and ensure that your trip to the Masai Mara is unforgettable, taking care of all the logistical details so that you can focus on enjoying and photographing the wonders of the Mara from sunrise to sunset.

This safari is designed for those looking to experience and photograph the true essence of an African safari, immersing themselves in the experience from the first ray of light to the last sunset.

For those interested in exploring more luxurious and relaxing options, our agency also offers alternatives in other African destinations. Visit our website to discover more safaris in Africa that might catch your interest.

The Camp: Oltepesi

In the heart of the Masai Mara, the choice of accommodation varies from basic tents to luxurious lodges equipped with every imaginable amenity. However, Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp distinguishes itself for reasons beyond conventional luxury.

Founded in 2017 by acclaimed Norwegian nature photographer Arnfinn Johansen and his Maasai partner, John Siololo, Oltepesi is a lodge specializing in photographic safaris. This camp combines comfort with authenticity, offering an experience purely focused on safari and photography, without superfluous distractions such as swimming pools or lounges with panoramic views.

Accommodation consists of spacious tents, each equipped with two double beds, private bathroom and shower, ensuring privacy and comfort. The common area includes a dining room and lounge, where exceptional meals are served, dinner in the dining room and breakfast and picnic lunches in the savannah, allowing you to fully enjoy the natural environment.

The true essence of Oltepesi lies in its dedication to wildlife photographers, both amateur and professional, and wildlife photography enthusiasts. The camp is renowned for having some of the best guides in the Masai Mara, all with extensive experience working with photographers, ensuring total immersion in the beauty and diversity of African wildlife.

Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp is not just a place to stay; it is a gateway to an unforgettable experience in the Masai Mara, designed specifically to capture the majesty of the natural world through the lens of a camera.

With the abundance of wildlife, the best Maasai guides, off-road permits and specially modified vehicles for low angle photography, the opportunities to capture stunning wildlife images are second to none.

The Photo Safaris
Full day safaris in the best light

All game drives will take place in the Masai Mara National Reserve. We usually leave camp before sunrise and stay out all day, returning only after sunset. This gives us the opportunity to maximize the time we are photographing animals and ensures that we are out during the hours with the best light.

Of course, if you prefer to return to camp during the day, that is also possible. Please inform your guide the night before so that lunch can be arranged at the camp.

Photographing from the ground

In many situations, it will also be possible to photograph from outside the car, on foot or lying on the ground. We will do this only when it is safe for both guests and wildlife.

The Guides

Our guides understand what it means to deal with professional and demanding wildlife photographers and always work hard to provide you with the best photographic opportunities. They are exceptionally skilled at finding the animals, reading the situation, predicting what will happen next and positioning the vehicle optimally for photography.

Specially modified vehicles for wildlife photography

Our safari vehicles are Toyota Land Cruisers 4WD, three-row long edition. Based on many years of experience with wildlife photography in East Africa, the cars are modified to offer the best working conditions for professional and other demanding wildlife and nature photographers.

They accommodate three rows of seats behind the guide/driver and can comfortably carry six guests, two per row, so everyone is guaranteed a "windowside" seat. The maximum number of guests in a car is seven. For groups of photographers who need space for their equipment, no more than 4 guests per vehicle is recommended.

For photographers, we usually recommend removing the first row of seats, as this allows you to lie on the floor of the car and photograph animals from a low and attractive angle. This is only allowed when it is safe to do so. We can remove any combination of seats to suit your needs.

The cars are open sided with low framed canvas windows, which are always rolled up if it is not raining. Having no windows with large open sides and no vertical window frames is very convenient for general photography, sweeps, action photography, etc. The cars have drop-down roofs that can be opened and closed by guests. Usually, it is open all the time. There is a large opening so you can move quickly and change positions back and forth in the car while you are photographing. Photographing from the drop-down roof can be very convenient at times. The roof will also provide protection from the sun. Sandbags are provided in the car, but you can also bring your own and fill them at the campsite.

Photography from low angles

The cars have hinged side doors, forming a platform for photography from low angles. When the first row of seats is removed, there is plenty of floor space in the front with five seats still available in the rear. The floor is covered with a soft rubber mat. This offers maximum opportunity for photography from low angles through the low windows, open sides and door openings. How many seats you would like to remove is optional and can be changed during the safari so that you can arrange the space in a way that suits the working requirements for you and your group. You can also use a tripod or monopod, but we recommend sandbags. Sandbags are provided in the vehicle, but you can also bring your own if you wish, and we will fill them for you.

In-car charging facilities

The vehicles are fitted with 230 volt sockets (UK standard). Charging cameras, phones, laptops, etc., can be done while driving, ensuring that you always have fully charged batteries. There are 4-6 power sockets in the car. Remember to bring your own travel plug adapters. You can also charge camera batteries, phones, laptops, etc. at the camp (recommended).

Exclusive car for you and your group

Unlike many other lodges that offer "shared rides" with other guests who may have different interests than you, your vehicle will always be for your exclusive use. This means you have complete control over when you leave, where you go, how long you stay out, how long you stay on sightings, and how you would like the vehicle to be positioned on sightings. Always subject to safety considerations and giving some consideration to other vehicles that may be in the sighting.
